When I joined Texas Computer Cooperative (or TCC) back in 2012 my first project was to design a mobile version of their Parent Portal software. The TCC creates software for public and charter schools across Texas. They currently serve over 800 school districts statewide.
Parent Portal is the software parents use to get updates about their students grades, attendance as well as giving them the ability to enroll new students, participate in online registration, and edit their students information online. The TCC wanted a mobile version of the software which would only perform a subset of functions offered by the full version.
Parent Portal Mobile was a huge success. I designed the application with the customer in mind; the parent. My goal wasn't to simply to display data on the screen, but to give parents a good experience. I'm a parent of school aged children, so I relied heavily on customer empathy to arrive at a design that was simple and intuitive to use.
Many parents found it so much easier to use than full version they stopped using the full version.
This is an early promotional video I produced to introduce the product to managers across the state.
